Medical transcription might be
just what you're looking for! |
Hi, my name is Rennie, and I'm a medical transcriptionist.
Thanks for visiting my site! I graduated from the Career Step medical
transcription course in 2001. I started my first job about a week after
graduation and have been happily transcribing (from home) ever since. I am so
pleased with the training Career Step provided me that I decided to become a
Career Step affiliate and help get the word out about this awesome course.
So that I won't seem like a total stranger to you, please allow me to tell you a
little bit about myself. First, I’ll answer the burning question that I just
know (haha) is on your mind!: “Rennie, where the heck did you get that nick?!”
Rennie is actually a derivative of my middle name, which is Rene. When I first
went on the Internet (in about 1996), I used Rene as my nickname. People started
calling me Ren and then Rennie, and the name just stuck. :)
I am originally from Port Arthur, Texas, but I’ve lived in the Houston area for
most of my adult life. I’m Texas born ‘n bred, and I just love getting those
Southern dictators who my fellow Northern, Eastern, and Western MT brothers and
sisters call “ESLs.” Yes, “y’all” is very much a part of my vocabulary, as is
fronchard (front yard) and fixin’ to. *laugh*
I have a BS degree
in accounting, and I worked for many years in accounting before I discovered
medical transcription. Truthfully, I was becoming very burned out in the
corporate life, and the long daily commute in Houston rush-hour traffic was
horrifying! In about the year 2000, I happened to meet an MT in an IRC chat room
(not an MT chat room). We became “cyber buddies,” and she aggressively
encouraged me to seek a career in medical transcription. She felt that it was
something I would be happy with and would well utilize my existing skill set. I
had good PC skills and very good English grammar and punctuation skills, needed
very little face-to-face social contact, and was very detail oriented and
analytical. After some research and some soul-searching, I decided that I wanted
to pursue this.
After graduating, I started my MT career from home, and although, at this point,
I earn less money than I did in accounting, I am so much happier. I absolutely
love medical transcription; it's just a perfect fit for me. My only regret is
that I didn't discover this field earlier in my life!
I have transcribed many work types during my MT career, including multispecialty
clinic notes, hospital discharge summaries, hospital consultations, hospital
H&Ps, op notes, and ER/urgent care reports. I currently work as a QA
(quality assurance) editor for a national
transcription company, where I enjoy working from home and setting my own
schedule.
I absolutely love the Internet. It has completely changed our world in so many
ways, hasn’t it? The Internet has enabled many of us (MTs) to move out of the
dinosaur age and begin working from home right after graduation. That was, for
the most part, unheard of five or ten years ago. A new MT had to be able to be
close to more experienced MTs to be nurtured, coached, and guided. The trained
ear of the experienced MT was an essential part of the training and internship
of virtually every single MT at that time. The Internet has changed that. Now,
the new MT has access to other MTs all over America and even in other countries.
Over the past five to ten years, a thriving online MT community has sprung up.
There are almost more MT bulletin boards, discussion groups, news groups, chat
rooms, e-mail lists, and Web sites than one can count. I myself run an MT e-mail list (MT
Netizens) with over 500 members.
Medical transcription (MT) is one of the fastest growing home-based professions
in the country. Let Career Step's quality medical training program help you
learn the secrets of working at home and making a good income. Train at home
using either a text-based or an online Internet training program.
As a Career Step student, you will transcribe hundreds of reports in all major
specialties. All dictation is taken from actual medical recordings. The Career
Step training program focuses on preparing you for the real world.
